REPORTS OF APHIDS AND
On May 8th. FMC’s Technical Rep Nick Hustedde, was rating a wheat trial in Carlyle, IL. He noticed that Bird Oat Aphids were increasing in population.
Bird Cherry Oat Aphid Notes:
• Fall moisture can improve host plant and aphid development (plenty of fall moisture last year)
• Bird Cherry Oat Aphids are known to transmit BYDV in the fall and overwintering aphids can continue spring transmission.
• See the attached HatchTrak for more details on aphids in wheat.
• Threshold – when aphid numbers meet or exceed 10 aphids / ft of row (Nick counted as high as 24 in Carlyle. IL on 5/8/19).
True Armyworm Notes:
• Consecutive weeks of cool wet weather in the spring are conducive for armyworm development as predator and parasite activity is reduced.
• After hatch, feeding occurs mostly at night and each larvae could potentially consume 3 whole wheat plants.
• Wheat yield is typically impacted when flag leaves are fed upon before soft dough stage.
• As plants mature armyworm may shift feeding to wheat beards and clip heads. After wheat has matured, migration may occur to corn or grain sorghum fields.
• Threshold – 3 armyworms / sq ft
Why Mustang MAXX insecticide is your best choice to control these pests?
• Provides more consistent efficacy on later armyworm instar larvae when applied @ 4 oz (check labels to compare)
• Provides fast knockdown and excellent residual on both of these pests
• Shortest PHI in wheat a 14 days (vs. 30 days for others)
